3 Watt Analog Bag Cell Phones - Anywhere they can be used?

Greetings, cleaning out my store room I came upon a box of 12 perfect condition Analog 3 watt bag cell phones. I know the USA has gone digital, but I was wondering if there are still uses for these phones?

Is there anywhere in the USA or Overseas where analog phones like this can still be used or sold? Any other uses for them? (Don't say anchors or paper weights, I'm way ahead of you!)

Thanks,

Pete

While I can't say for certain, Analog phone service in the US have technically been shut down in the US since 2007 but there may be some countries in South or Central America that still offer service. Can't hurt to put 'em on eBay since someone may just buy them for historic value. Kind of like an old computer from the late 70's, nobody makes software/hardware for it but someone may still collect them.

Such things are used as movie props. They don't have to work.

You mean like my wife? :<)

I realize the date of your post, but by chance do you still have any of the bag phones? I would be interested in buying one. They still work in SW Alaska. Thanks, Dave

Samsung Gravity photos interrupted/corrupted during transfer

I was transferring photo's from the phones internal memory to my micro sd card, when I got a call. Rejecting the call, I noticed that around 60 of my photo's had gone missing. They still take up space in the internal memory, but the phone doesn't see any photos as being there. I have tried using the Samsung Pc Studio, which didn't find anything. I have tried two different file recovery programs on the micro sd card, which found fragments of the photo's, but wasn't overly helpful.

I really want to try and get these pictures back, any idea how to access them or remove them from the corrupted bit of my phone? Thanks.

Question about Android OS updates

Just curious if they could or would include being able to have more options for contacts such as allowing you to set a certain tone for each person when they text you. I have a Droid X and know you can only set a certain ringtone,so I downloaded and use GO SMS Pro as my main text messaging app,but would be nice if they would just have it as a main option. So I guess my big question is if that's more a phone thing or an Android OS thing.

Reply 1 : Question about Android OS updates

that it is an OS thing rather than a phone issue. Kind of like when Apple updated their iOS last year that allowed multi-tasking on the iPhone along with several updates.

Reply 2 : Question about Android OS updates

to do this for you, then it's an OS thing, since the phone can provide that feature, it's just not native in the OS.

Thanks for the info. Guess I'll just have to see what's included in the next update.

can you give advice ?

Hello people. I'm thinking to buy a new mobile phone and I still couldn't decide. Need for your help and recommends .
I want these options included in phone :
1GHZ processor
512mb RAM or more
HD quality video
5mpx or more with FLASH
HDMI output
3.5mm jack headphones
Micro USB charging port(changeable)
Multitouch screen with high quality
Unlocked for all providers
Android(changeable)
GPS
No phsical Keyboard or slider

Best regards

Reply 1 : can you give advice ?

Without this, hard to offer any advice on which handset.

Reply 2 : can you give advice ?

All the high end Android phones are well over qualified to meet all your demands.

The HD quality video would come from a Super AMOLED screen, which the Samsung Galaxy S has along with some of the other new phones.

I have the Samsung Captivate, but I wouldn't recommend it. I have done alot of research before buying this phone, but it doesn't live up to its standards (meaning it doesn't feel like a 1Ghz processor or have 512 MB ram.)

Try the Motorola Atrix, has all of the features you want.

Reply 3 : can you give advice ?

Motorola Atrix thanks for this advice. it seems the phone which im looking for. relly thanks bro. Now i will search for price on the internet happy

Reply 4 : can you give advice ?

Unless you buy it unlocked, the Atrix is only sold for use with At&t Wireless in the US.

Reply 5 : can you give advice ?

is there anywhere in USA selling this product unlocked and not used? Thanks.

Reply 6 : can you give advice ?

Keep in mind there have been some reports of poor audio quality on the atrix. I'd do some research on this before diving in. There may be the rare instance where you actually require the phone to be a phone wink

Reply 7 : can you give advice ?

I am certain you can find online resellers who will sell it unlocked but it won't be cheap. Probably cost at least $500 or more. Just do an internet search for "Motorola Atrix" and you will find plenty out there.

Reply 8 : can you give advice ?

Thanks for replies. This summer I'll go to US by work_and_travel program and i'll have the chance for try and use these mobile phones after i can decide for buy happy i'll be close to new york i think.

Adding on a Data plan; Iphone vs. Android

I made a topic a week ago about how to get a Tmobile phone on my ATT service so that I could use a smart phone with ATT and no data plan.

Well.. I think I'm finally going to just cave and get a nice phone with a data plan. I'm sick of crappy phones and it really would be nice to have internet when I need it.

A few questions. I'm currently on a family plan where my line is $10. I believe we also have family unlimited texting. So I just need to add a data plan. Can I add the 200mb data plan, while the others on my plan do not? And is the 200mb plan exactly the same for iPhone and other, or are there differences in plan rates/usage?

Next is the data usage. I'm never done this so I don't know what 200mb realistically equates to. Is this super low, or a decent amount? I'm on my computer almost all day, so I won't use it a lot. I'd use it to occasionally check email in class, update my fantasy sports teams when I'm away from a computer, etc. Won't be on it a lot as I'm used to not using at all now.

Then I'm going to have some questions of Iphone vs Android but I'll wait for you guys to help me on the rest first.

Thanks!

I've been good this month and I'm at 60MB in 10 days. If I happened to watch a video or do much in the way of apps my bet is I'd blow the 200 you noted (MB! not mb.)

My son went with the Virgin Mobile 25 buck a month plan and the slightly more expensive Android at Target. It's unlimited text and data and 300 minutes of talk. He likes it.

-> I think you'd blow past the 200MB number too often.
Bob

Reply 2 : Adding on a Data plan; Iphone vs. Android

I know with my non-smart phone, there's a mobile email option that I can add for like $5 per month or something and it doesn't go by data usage. Does checking email count towards usage if you do it through the app?

Basically.. I guess the thing is I'm doing the 200mb plan regardless. I'm not going from paying 0 per month to jumping up two notches and going to the $25 extra per month. I can't afford it. I guess I'm wondering what I'll be able to do with it.

Reply 3 : Adding on a Data plan; Iphone vs. Android

How does wi-fi work? If I'm constantly around my school and stuff, couldn't I just tap into their wi-fi network and avoid data usage?

Reply 4 : Adding on a Data plan; Iphone vs. Android

Sorry on the three straight posts. I just got off with a AT&T rep and I've figured everything out. I'm going to just grab a phone off eBay and add the $15 plan to my line.

Now, Iphone vs. Android is the huge issue here. I know the pros and cons of each for the most part. If I were to get the unlimited data, I'd probably go with Android because of how much you can do with them.. but with 200Mb I'm a bit more limited to what I can do. So is there still a reason to go android?

Here's what I want:
1) Great mp3 player and functionality. I don't have an mp3 player so this will be my main music source.
2) Calendar function. I use this daily to schedule homework and other events
3) email.
4) apps. which has more useful offline apps? I'm going to want to download some fun games and apps on wi-fi and then use them later on (non-internet/usage apps)

If mp3 is my main concern, should I definitely go Iphone? Or do some of the android phones have mp3 players/layouts just as nice?

Also, price is a big factor. I'm looking to spend $150. I realize I can't go and get an Iphone 4. So we're basically comparing Iphone 2/3 to a midrange android.. so keep that in mind.

Thanks so much everyone!

Reply 5 : Adding on a Data plan; Iphone vs. Android

All four of your criteria are essentially a draw and subject to one's tastes. Luckily, both the Apple app store and Android market have a heck of a lot of great apps for just about everyone, including great ones that are free. The primary difference is how the device works IMHO and E. Android is not standardized between handsets, so one might function little different than on another one. This might be a slight advantage to you if you like/need to really shape a device to meet your liking. Android requires a little more effort IMO. If you want something that requires less tinkering and very HQ experience out of the box, I'd choose an iPhone.

And btw, there's simply no reason to buy an iPhone from ebay when you can find refurb 3GS models for < $50 from ATT directly. Even a 90 day warranty (or maybe more, since it's an apple product) is better than no warranty via fleabay.

Reply 6 : Adding on a Data plan; Iphone vs. Android

I do not use iTunes for my music. Never have, never will. I buy cds and upload them to my computer. Will the Iphone allow me to integrate music that has not originated from Itunes?

Also, the cheapest refurb from ATT for my is 269. I'm not eligible for the discount. I'm looking for something in the $150 and under range.

So as of now it looks like my best best is an android of some type unless I can get lucky and find a friend with an old Iphone. Are there any droids that are particularly good at their music interface? I'd also like a bar phone that is fully touch screen and no slide out. I actually like my slide out keyboard.. but I've noticed that since it prevents from having a full phone glove, it increases the chances of the phone breaking.

So what do you think are good options for me?

Reply 7 : Adding on a Data plan; Iphone vs. Android

Yes, you will need iTunes for the iPhone to work well. It's a drawback in your case, I suppose.

The ball is really in your court. What handset suits your needs at this point seems to be within a price range, and much of it, stemming from your particular taste in design. Visit some stores and look at the handsets in person before diving in. Also spend some time at a more cellular focused site such as Howardforums.com for more granular level info that you desire.

FWIW, you should consider adding a line to your plan to be accessible for a lower refurb price. If you add it all up over the life of the contract, the cost it might still be lower, and you can have a year warranty on the device.

I'm just going to let fate do the work. Adding into the discussion I've been reading how amazing the win7 phones are. I've got a good potential deal on a 3gs Iphone, as well as a Samsung focus with win7. I'm going to just grab whichever I can for cheaper, though I'm strongly leaning towards this Focus which looks beautiful and has 16gb capability

Reply 9 : Adding on a Data plan; Iphone vs. Android

IMO W7 is still too new and need a few tweaks to get it all right. You may have a better time using the device out of the box w/ an iPhone 3GS IMNSHO.

Reply 10 : Adding on a Data plan; Iphone vs. Android

It looks like I'm going to try out the Focus. I got a great deal and most importantly I can go get the phone tomorrow. I'd really like to try out this now OS. It looks like its the most widely expanding market out there right now and has a bright future ahead. Hardware wise, this phone seems much better than the Iphone. Most importantly to me is the expandable memory (8gb was a bit too small while 16gb was too expensive) as well as battery replacement ability. Also I'm loving the aesthetics of the Focus running the windows 7, and lets be honest.. if we're going to stare at something all day, it might as well be pretty.

But in all honesty, it came down to the fact that I could get it now and cheap. It seems as if each system has their flaws and pros. I can get a new phone in less than a year.. so if I were going to take a risk, I might as well do it now rather than when I'm putting myself under a new 2 year contract.

I'll update back tomorrow after I get the phone.

Reply 11 : Adding on a Data plan; Iphone vs. Android

If you believe the blogs that market W7, then yes, the future is bright. Ask anyone else in the industry OTOH, and you might get another answer. Don't forget MS is about two years behind the others, which is a huge issue if you want to gain market share. IMO they will certainly keep a segment of the corporate market, but they are too far behind to catch up to the consumer market currently preferring either the iOS or Android right now.

If you can get a new phone in a year it might make sense however.

Reply 12 : Adding on a Data plan; Iphone vs. Android

Until it actually shipped. For developers like me and those I know it was a disappointment.

To make matters worse, if you spoke out you can be shouted down and cast out.

We decided to go with Android for the next round.

how to convert MP3 to listenable CD format in standard CD pl

I've found some old time radio audio on the web. I'd like to record these onto CD and listen to them in my car CD player. How can I do this? I think I have to convert the MP3 to another format. Is there any free downloadable software that can do this?
Thanks in advance for responding.

Reply 1 : how to convert MP3 to listenable CD format in standard CD pl

I record MP3 to cd all the time and it works on my car radio. Yuo have to use a music cd. The car radios (at least mine) won't play CDRW.

I burn music to cd-r and wasn't able to play it in my car and home stereo.looking forward your response as soon as possible.

Most windows pcs comes with at least Windows Media Player and that should work fine. Some people have mentioned Audacity.

Reply 5 : how to convert MP3 to listenable CD format in standard CD pl

It's shows you how to do it in Windows Media Player 11. If you don't have that version, it's okay. The same concept applies to earlier versions as well as other media software.

I'd just burn them as audio CD's. They will play in everything.

If you have windows media player all you have to do is where you click burn at the top menu there is a drop down menu for burn and put it on audio cd. Hope this was helpful! Good Luck!

It would be nice to have a 'Shameless Plugs Forum'. The one spot where everyone can place their 'spam'.

Does it work?

Well, we have them at our GNS newspaper websites, allowing members to post FREE classified ads to the forum, as werll as, events, yardsales, fav bands and websites. This experiment, is not only boosting paid classifieds, it's generating more advertising dollars from our major clients. There is no better way to compete with sites such as Craig's List(That is not a plug, just an example).

Doubt it would work the same way at Cnet, but There may come a day, when this type of spamming is considered beneficial to all parties.

don't know the boundaries or don't follow the rules. Give them an inch, they take 3. It's like giving graffiti artists (nothing against graffiti artists) a sanctioned area for them to legally put up their murals. While some artists do respect the rules and stay within the permitted areas to paint, there are others who go off limits putting murals and tags up outside of those sanctioned areas --eventually ruining it all with the sanctioned area becomes off limits too.

The reason why these forum have remained as constructive and productive as they are today, is because our incredible volunteer mods--who continue to proactively monitor the forums for spam and ads and remove them immediately, without them this these forums would easily turn into spammers' stomping ground.

I've seen entire forums get over taken by spammers within a few weeks and if nothing is done about them, it eventually they go down the tubes.

funkid7, I don't know if you knew this, but did you know that the music.download.com had a forum for artists a couple years back? It was a forum created for music artist for them to talk shop. Well, eventually it was completely overtaken by spammers because artists would link to their music sites and what not, and eventually spammers started to do the same. Next thing you know, you couldn't tell an advertiser from an artist and eventually the forums were trashed and had to be shut down because nobody would visit it anymore except spammers.

While I can see some benefits of this type of forum you mention, it requires constant monitoring as it can easily get abused and get out of hand. And the negative side of it out weighs the benefits as the reason I stated above. I would like to keep these forums focused on the tech side of things and keeping our members in the mind frame of helping one another out without having to wade through ads and other off-topic posts. There are plenty of sites for ads and classfieds etc... out there and I will leave it up to those sites to host them. I do appreciate your suggestion, but for now I will pass on the idea.

Respectfully,
-Lee

Totally understood Lee. We 'do' have to monitor our forums heavily and have had some abuse now and then.
