Need help getting photos from...
Cell Phone for Older Folks, or for Handicapped Folks
I'd like to make a case for the development of a cell phone that would fill the needs of older folks and some handicapped folks too.
My mom is getting older, she's 92. (I'm 63, but I consider myself young.) My mom lives clear across the country from me. She lives alone, does her own shopping, drives herself to her various appointments and activities. Yes, she still has a drivers license and she has never had an accident. It would be to her advantage, though, to have a cell phone with her, just in case something unexpected happens, as she goes about her routine.
Oh, I got her a phone. She's a family member on my Cingular account. I have tried several times to show her how to use it. But it intimidates her. The buttons are too small for her no longer nimble fingers. She worries that she will somehow make a mistake that will cost me a lot of money, or minutes, or something.
She needs a phone that makes calls the old fashioned way, by dialing the number, on a keypad big enough to see and manipulate easily, so that she can have confidence that she can make the call, get it right, and not accidentally activate some little understood but very expensive technology.
She grew up with a phone that made calls - period. She doesn't need a camera (actually she has and uses a Sony digital camera). She doesn't IM. She won't use it to send email, she has a computer for that. She won't want the latest ring tones. She just needs a simple, reliable, easy to recharge, easy to make calls on, difficult to make mistakes on, cell phone that she can carry with her when she leaves her house.
I have tried to find her one several times, without luck. The young people at my Cingular store are sympathetic, wish they could help me, but they don't know of any phone that is designed to fit the needs of an older or a handicapped person.
So, CNET Reviewers, and anyone else out there who has some influence on design or review of new products, here's a market waiting for a product. Or, if someone is already making a simple phone for older folks, and I have just been unable to find it, point me at it. They have a customer. Oh, and if I need to change carriers to get it, I'll do that too.

A SERIOUS Problem: Disappearing MP3 Files On Hard Drive
This really needs to be addressed, imo. Why would MP3s disppear on my or anyone else's HD anyway? This SHOULD NOT happen.
I only have these possible reasons as to how this could happen, and also questions:
1) Is the feature ''compressed old files'' the problem?
When this feature is turned ON, does it compress files and then are these ''compressed'' files still accessible?
I once used a computer which is now downstairs, I've been using it for about 5 years now. When I opened up a particular music program, it asked me to ''scan'' for any music on the hard drive. So, I let it for music.
I know where my music is, I know I have a certain amount and it's organized. Funny enough, when the music program was finished scanning.. guess what? I had found music that I had downloaded about 3 years ago!!!
Tell me, how is THAT possible? I tried searching for these files because, I KNEW I didn't have these 3 year-old files on my hard drive before.. how was this possible? Were they just hidden away, If so, why?
2) MP3s still disappear while I am tagging them or moving them around.
I was tagging music one day (this happened atleast 3 times) with MusicMatch and as I was almost finished tagging the newly encoded music CD, I then noticed with my own two eyes that TRACK-02 had DISAPPEARED!
What is going on there? WHY would it just disappear like that... as if it fell into a bottomless pit of no return? That is NOT right at all, that's insane.

This is a very strange and annoying problem, I had to go back and re-evaluate my entire library to check for any more MISSING songs and to my luck, I found atleast 3 more CDs with 1 or 2 tracks missing. Just FANTASTIC!
Who knows, I bet I have hundreds of missing MP3 and I will probably never know! My father has atleast 100 gigs of classic tunes from HIS CD collection.. and there's no way he'll ever find out.
Is a 8gb iPod touch enough memory?
- 1000 or so songs
- Movies 2-4
- A few apps
- Maybe a few pictures but not many

Best portable internet device?
I have a Blackberry, which I love, but I'm shopping for a portable web browsing and media device. It seems like CNET has completely stopped covering this category--perhaps they've been replaced by netbooks? Anyway, which one would you all recommend as best, given that CNET doesn't really review these things anymore (or if you could point me to a site that does, that'd be great too). It seems that the major players I've been running across are the Archos 7, the Nokia 810, etc. (I'm sure that list is outdated, but that's why I post!) Any input would be much appreciated, thanks!

Even though there is headphone sound with Windows Media Player, I do not have sound using PocketMusic(free). Sound is furnished via the internal speakers using either program.

7-11 customer non-support can't/won't resolve issue. They refer me to Apple. Apple will only support AT&T clientele. I'm trapped !!

I had originally used WMP11 and 128 is the lowest, I tried Audacity but I was unhappy with the sampling (there was a faint and annoying "pop" every eight seconds or so).

Iphone 4 Dust under screen
I have just bought an iphone 4 and realised there are 2 tiny specks of dust under the screen.
Vodafone have been happy to replace the unit but how likely is this to be the case with the replacement unit?

New Tv/Home Cinema Advise
Hi all,
I'm looking to upgrade my current TV/Home Cinema System.
Currently I'm considering the Pioneer PDP-LX5090 Plasma TV and the Pioneer Pioneer SC-LX81, can anyone suggest the where to get the best bargain for these?
I also wants suggestions on speakers to complete my 7.1 home cinema setup, I've used 2 sets of Onkyo HTIB in the best but want to try out seperates now.
I have budget of GBP700 for the speaker and preferably floorstanding models (e.g Mission Elan E3 AV system).
I'm hoping to keep my new system for at least 4 years before considering upgrade.

I have just bought a Tom Tom GO 730 and found it is not Bluetooth compatible with my Nokia 5800, so will try my chances to try and get my money back, but could be slim due to licences etc etc.

sat nav for mothers
my mum wants sat nav, needs to be easy to read for when she forget her specs (nearly all the time coz she doesnt ike wearing them) and easy to use (she has issues with working out how to make her blu ray dvd player work sometimes, like which channel to put it on) and easy to follow (she has no sense of direction, so none of this bear left when they mean turn left, nor go north, or anything vague like that).
what do you guys recommend?
shes going on about her friends sat nav (navman or garmin or something, its like shes combinding two brands!) that shes quite sure has a hardware keyboard rather than touch screen...

Linux netbook and usb flash drives?
I've just bought an Cnm minibook which has the linux operating system.
I tried to connect my usb flash drive pen and it just said usb 1.
Do I need to reformat it to get to work with linux?
Acer Aspire One
Don't know if anyone has one of these fantastic pieces of kit, but I do so if there is anything you would like to know, just ask.
My Aspire One is a A150-LW which is the White Aspire One with 120GB Hard Drive, 1GB RAM, Linpus Linux pre-installed.
I then went to dual boot it with Windows XP and then removed Linpus and put Mandriva 2009 on it.
So any Questions fire away and I will see what I can do to answer them.
The Uk's Most Expensive Mobile Broadband?
In February 2009 I purchased a T-Mobile Dongle and ShareDock from the York T-Mobile shop.
After just over two weeks the unit ceased to work.
After several phone calls I took it back to the shop from which I purchased it and was told that as it was more than 14 days old it needed to be returned for repair.
I was given the telephone number to call T-Mobile (at 10p per minute) and after some delay got to speak to an operator.
I was told that a returns bag would be despatched to me and the item would be returned for repair and that this would normally take up to 28 days.
I asked if it was possible to have a replacement unit whilst it was in for repair and the shop said this was against T-Mobile policy (even though they clearly had stock and demonstration units in the store).
I explained that I felt this unfair as I was being charged for a service which I had - through no fault of my own - no means to access.
Three weeks passed (during which the line rental was efficiently taken from my account as it has been on a monthly basis since) and no returns bag appeared.
As I needed mobile access I took out a Pay as You Go deal with another service provider to tide me over.
Total cost was now approaching
Whats the best netbook out there currently?
Ideally looking for something with decent screen real estate (so highest possible resolution).
Also nothing that looks too washed out color wise.
Comfy keyboard and trackpad (oh and good looks) would be nice as well.
I know I am probably asking for a lot but figured there must be some new ones either just out or on their way.
I have no clue with netbooks really, but just need something to browse the net, check gmail account and possibly play some movies from time to time.
My Dad has a Samsung NC10 and swears by it.
But is there anything I should be holding out for as most of these netbooks have been out for quite a while now.
Look forward to any advice please guys.

Well as no-one had seemed to try it I thought that I would on my trusty N95.
I have to say I'm impressed at its potential.
I ran videos on the PC site of YouTube, Sky News, ITV player and of course BBC iplayer.
It was admittedly pretty jerky running through my wi-fi connection (video & audio).
It might be a strain on the processor as well.
Reminded me of early 3G streaming TV but if they can sort it out they're on to a winner.
You feel you're seeing the future.

Just converted my old 2 x AAA maglite to run on LED's
Can highly recommend it to anyone, makes the torch soooo much brighter, I think it compared to my 3D maglite now!
I've only mentioned this as it appears that a lot of people have unused maglites knocking about these days

PC Optical drive driver/registry problem. Help!
I've had a DVD reader and a separate DVD writer in my PC.
A week or so ago I noticed that a disc I tried to use didn't work in either drive.
I didn't have much time and forgot about it.
I just installed a new BluRay writer (in place of the DVD writer) today and that didn't work either.
Every time I restart the computer, I get 'install driver failed'.
It's a LG BH10LS30 and is supposed to be Win 7 compatible.
I've tried via device manager to uninstall/update drivers.
Didn't work.
I ran Microsoft's Mr Fixit.
Didn't work.
I did get an error message 'Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged'
Apparently there's some sort of driver conflict going on (I think I read that somewhere) and I can't get either drive to work.
Help!

G'day to all!
Just as I am able to aquire the 903 from HK, Some say the 903 is due for release soon in my home country, Australia.
Obviously the unique value will be diminished when released through the main stream.

Also, its been a reasonable 'while' since released in Japan.

..so I sent back the Aino cos is was too unreliable (freezing, bulky'ish, slow)....
I'm not so bothered about having the latest, flashiest handset, but am now torn between 2 - the C903 or W995.
I only use the phone to text, occasionally call and would like a decent camera.
What, in peoples experience, are the quality of the photos like in comparison to each handset?
I favourt these 2 as I like the conversation text function!

Satio headphone options
Hey guys,
Can anyone comment on what exactly you get with the satio for headphones? I realise it isnt a 3.5mm connector but some reviews talk about using a wireless adaptor (techradar talk of the mh100) and some actually show pictures of things in the box and a 3.5mm plug is in there along with what looks like a wireless adaptor.
So do you get one in the box or not? If not, is the SE adaptor the one to get or is there another adaptor that is better?
I'd get a vivaz and save on the hassle but the added camera ability and the value (given the vivaz is just out) really encourage me toward the satio.

Although the spec of the Robyn is a little sketchy at the moment, it is supposedly an Android OS based phone device with 5.0 megapixel camera, 3.5mm audio jack, micro USB port and Wi-Fi.
Will be interesting to see exactly how small that screen on the Robyn is.

Galaxy S (i9000) display problems
hello,
So I took the plunge and got a i9000 from CPW (which means I'm now stuck with it for 24months!).
I'm only one day in but have noticed a massive (IMO) problem.
When I go online to a website - say even the Samsung Galaxy S site and page - I have a severe banding occuring where a smooth gradient should be.
Do I have a duff phone?
I think its pretty shocking given that the phone is primarily being sold on the sheer 'brilliance' of the screen quality.
Given that I'm getting a screen effect that looks worse then a 320px resolution screen.
I will try and snap this tonight and upload.
I bought the phone as i wanted as close to PC internet as possible on a mobile device - i'm getting nothing like that!
When I zoom in it doesnt make a difference.
Just gets worse ( i though it might be like when you look at a large image at say 33% and the screen just can't display the detail properly).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Firstly I must admit to be a very basic phone person.My phillips sagem that my daughter bought me 12 years ago has died.
I would like to buy a new mobile but am totally at a loss what to get.
I would like it be be prepaid as I only use it for emergencies.i am a more mature woman and totally uniterested in mobiles.
I would find a calender very usefulll.
I would really like to have GPS on it that I could use on a golf course, but only if it did not cost anything.
I know basically nothing about how mobiles work and how much they cost.
I do not want to spend a fortune on one but wifi would be nice.presumbably if it had wifi I could use the internet free if I found a hotspot? Is that correct?Please can someone enlighten me and point me in the correct direction.

I haven't really had a chance to think about the rights and wrongs, I hope people will discuss in this thread.
However, my emotional, knee-jerk reaction is eff off Newell! There's a BBC website, there's BBC iPlayer, i've paid my licence fee so I should be able to access BBC content from as many different content vehicles as I like
I hope this does not mean the app gets delayed - on iPhone or any other mobile platform.

I'm looking at getting a stand for my iphone 3GS.
What I am after is a deskstand that lets me watch tv on the iphone in landscape.

I have used until yesterday a HTC Legend and with all it's problems - mainly poor cell/wifi I now have use of an iPhone4 32g.
So it's early days but on just 24hours use I still prefer the Android OS.
Where's delivery reports or anything useful in the notification bar??
More than 2 profiles? Auto wifi based on location? Never mind the keyboard...
I'll give it a week and then I'll either revert to the Legend or give it to the other half and use her HTC Desire.

QNX and the next blackberry OS
I'm surprised that there hasn't been more discussion on this, but since the news that the rumoured blackpad is rumoured to drop very soon, then maybe the coming OS will be the precursor to the successor of OS7?
It does make me wonder what QNX has been doing over the last couple of years which made it so attractive to RIM.
The idea of developers being able to use Eclipse as an IDE to develop apps should hopefully really open up the blackberry appworld, and it seems to run along the lines of how apple sandboxes its apps.
Hopefully that should keep RIM on the top of the security that made it so popular in the first place.
Does anyone know more about QNX? Any guesses on how long bOS 7 it will take to come out, or anything to add to the wishlist? Not just about what's out there already, but how to make it an innovative and fresh experience.
Blackberry App World Problem
Can anyone help please?
Downloaded BB App world for my daughters BB 9105, have registered her an account but when she opens the app and log in it logs in fine but when she accepts the tems and conditions it sticks on the following page which is the account information page!
We have tried reinstalling the app, battery pulls, even registering a new account but it still the same, its been like this since yesterday when she added her bB bundle, its on O2 btw.
If anyone can suggest something i would be more than grateful

Couple of HTC Desire questions...
When I first joined this forum, I was pretty much like a lot of people on this site - I had a real passion for mobiles etc but over a period of time, I have decended into one of those people who isn't really concerned about mobiles anymore and therefore I have problems more frequently than ever before.
So I got a HTC Desire HD...
finally got around to playing with it however am having a few issues and know that someone will be able to help on here so here goes:
1.
I downloaded some apps from the 'Market' and cannot for the life of me find them on my device.
Clicking 'download' was enough right? There are no extra steps I'm missing are they?
2.
How can I take a screenshot of my device?
That's it for now but I'm sure I'll add to this over time.
PS: Just want to make it clear that I got the HTC on the recommendation of Majed (AKA Soul Guy) so it's all his fault
Desire or HD2
Hi, newbie seeking opinions/advice.
I am trying to decide between the Desire and the HD2, although I am also considering the Samsung Galaxy, but am put off by the lack of flash.
I used an XDA Exec 2 (PAYG) for a while but found it too cumbersome.
WinMo 6 also ok but inclined to crash, so I switched to a cheap Motorola W220 phone on PAYG.
I am now considering a contract for the first time having always used PAYG, but worked out that it would be as cheap to get a contract.
Main uses:
1) Talking
2) Some mobile internet (mainly checking prices online against shop prices if out and about)
3) I also take notes (to do lists and shopping lists)
4) Occasional photos as well, but I want a decent quality photo not something low res and fuzzy.
5) My burglar alarm phones me on my mobile if it activates, or to inform me of a power cut where it is on battery power and it needs to warn me if the battery is running low.
I have no experience of Android vs WinMo so again advice appreciated.
I may want to use the phone abroad (Europe and India) on the odd occasion.
Not long back from a friends wedding in India and am going again next January to another wedding in India.
Also looking for advice in respect of the best provider (O2, Voda, etc.)

everytime i access the camera, the 2GB microSD card (that came with the phone) resets itself and is blank with just the default folders ;my images, my sounds etc;
if i take the card out and put it back in it is fine and all my folders and files are back but this is of course very frustrating to have to do everytime i use the camera,
i tried reformatting the card but this did not help.
any ideas?

Unlocked 3GS, Any Problems?
Has anyone here who has unlocked a iPhone 3GS themselves (not bought an unlocked one abroad) had any issued with using any services?.
Ones like App Store, Email, MMS, Call, Texts and Web Browsing mainly?.
I know anyone can walk into a Apple/O2 store, jailbreak and unlock an iPhone 3GS in under 10 minutes but did not know if any services will be effected.

Which mobile reception is recommended for iPhone 4
I have ordered an iPhone 4 from Apple online store 2 weeks ago and am about to grab it.
I am deciding which reception to use.
1.
3-mobile 15 pounds/month 1GB internet 300 min,
2.
vodafone 20 pounds/month 500 mb internet 600 min,
or are there any other recommendation you would make.
Actually 300 min with 500 mb internet is enough for me, but my biggest concern is which one is providing stable and acceptable coverage and 3g internet speed in Birmingham.

HTC HD7 Windows vs iPhone 4 iOS from a mac viewpoint
First of all, let me put my cards on the table, I like mac stuff, I have a MBP, iPad, have has numerous iPhones, apple TV etc you could say that Im a bit of a mac fan.
Hell I even have some apps on the app store.
I picked up a HTC HD Windows mobile 7 at the weekend, purley based on the fact I really want to develop apps for it.
By day i work building .net applications so It should be something I need to look at, so I thought I would have a dabble.
What I wasn't expecting was to be so impressed with it.
So let me give you my first impressions and where I think its good/ bad
The Hardware
Yes its a big phone, but in all honesty this is all taken up with the screen real estate, its a little bigger than the andriod HTC desire.
First of all it feels like a well put together device.
One thing I do like is the built in stand, which is housed on the back of the handset.
However one thing I feel lets it down is this is also where the speaker is aswell, so to use it as a music / video player, I would say external speakers are the way forward.
The UI
I think until you have used the UI and how it fits together, theres a real chance you may not get it, maybe its like marmite for some people.
However I think this is one of the best bits of the phone.
I have been able to add albums, people, apps and other bits and bobs to the homescreen, this i like alot, however they will be faced at somepoint with the same dilema apple had, how to put alot of things on the home screen.
I also love the way some of the squares animate with little details.
Latest facebook status etc.
It just feels well thought about in that respect.
App Store Vs The Market Place
I wasnt expecting much from the Market place, however i am impressed how many apps there are at launch, so I suspect its only going to get more.
Alot of apps on there are on the App Store too, so some were farmilar.
I do however like the fact you can install the app and try them first before buying.
Music Integration
Lets be honest in the past MS has pretty much insisted that you only use Windows Media Player, so I was expecting a bit of a nightmare to get my music on to the device.
With a mac you can download a beta sync software, which allows you to sync from iTunes, music, videos, podcasts to the phone.
The only issue I have found so far with this is everytime I sync it erases then reloads everything.
However its still in beta, and may be fixed soon.
It was alot less painless than I expected.
Contacts
So far I think ive been quite positive about it, well heres my only real gripe and a bit of a showstopper for someone who uses a mac.
Unless you have all your contacts in Windows Live, then its a bit of a nightmare.
I have managed to add contacts to google and put them on the phone that way however.
Also since I have windows live and also put my facebook details in.
I now have a contact list that is massive and full of duplicates, which lets be honest is rather annoying.
There is an option to link the contacts together, however this isnt what I would need.
There is no option to pick and choose what is sync'd from what source, and to me that seems a bit of an oversight.
So to sum up, as a bit of an apple fan boi, I have to say I am quite impressed that they have made such a good job of this, I think in future itterations of the UI it will only get better.
I do feel the bar has been raised and feel its making the Apple iOS UI look a bit dated.
Is it an iPhone killer, it has the potential to be, however it would need that killer app for me.

HTC Desire Speed Test
Me & my work friend both have the same HTC Desire phones on the same T-mobile tariff with the settings the same for internet connection.
When we both downloaded a Speed test app and ran it to compare results, I was a little concerned that my result was approx 357kbps download but his was touching 2mb download.
Any ideas why this could be so?

LGs answer to the Tocco Ultra by the looks of it, though it certainly looks a lot mor snazzy.
Transparant glass slide out keypad, touch screen with s-class interface.
Multi-touch too.
Like the idea of drawing a letter on the screen to bring up features (draw an M for music etc).
